What is an Epoch in Crypto? 

In a blockchain system, an “epoch” is a certain period of time.

A blockchain network uses this time frame to determine when certain events will take places, such as the distribution of rewards or the assignment of a new set of validators to verify transactions. That time frame varies depending on blockchain technology. In layman’s terms, a fixed period of time in which new blocks are generated and added to a blockchain is referred to as an epoch.

For example, in the Ethereum (ETH) protocol, an epoch is defined as the period it takes 30,000 blocks to be processed. A typical epoch lasts anywhere between 100 and 200 hours, depending on the rate at which transactions are completed, and agreements are made.

Another example is the Cardano blockchain system, which uses epochs as time units. Cardano (ADA) uses a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism called Ouroboros Praos, which divides the blockchain into epochs of five days each. Following this, slots are created, with each slot consisting of a 20-second time frame inside the epoch. There are now 432,000 slots (equivalent to five days) available in each period.

The Advantages of Epoch in Crypto
